CLASSIC LUANGWA SAFARI
This classic safari through the South Luangwa National Park offers guests an impressive nature experience in Zambia. The itinerary is leisurely – you’ll stay in the remote and comfortable bush camps of the renowned Norman Carr Safaris along the Luwi and Luangwa Rivers and have ample time for fantastic wildlife viewing by jeep or on foot to discover an ecosystem that has evolved over thousands of years has not changed.
Day 1 | Arrive at Mfuwe – South Luangwa National Park
Upon arrival at Mfuwe Airport, you will be greeted by your guide and driven to your first bush camp in South Luangwa National Park. Depending on the time of arrival, after a relaxing break in the early evening hours, you will go on your first game drive in the national park.
Day 2 | South Luangwa National Park
Your second day in South Luangwa begins with an early morning game drive. For lunch, a rich lunchtime brunch with fresh salads and hearty delicacies awaits you. You can use the following lunch break to rest a bit or to observe which animals are around the camp or, if you are in Luwi, make a detour to the nearby ‘hippo hide’ to see the hippos from a safe distance watch! In the afternoon go on a game drive or a walking safari.
Day 3 – 4 | South Luangwa National Park
After two nights spent in the first bush camp, today you drive to another bush camp, for example to Nsolo, which is located in a very remote area of the South Luangwa National Park. At night you will hear the voices and sounds of wildlife roaming around the camp. After a light breakfast around the campfire, set off on foot in search of clues – follow a lion’s paw prints or follow the call of a group of baboons. You’ll quickly see that a South Luangwa walking safari isn’t just an outdoor walk, it’s a true pioneering experience.
Day 5 – 6 | South Luangwa National Park
Today you will embark on a leisurely game drive through the National Park to your next destination, the beautifully renovated Kakuli Bush Camp where you will spend the next few days on game drives. Kakuli is picturesquely situated above the Luangwa River and offers guests a beautiful view over the river and its inhabitants in the water. The layout of the camp with its panoramic terrace is ideal for observing the animals at leisure, especially leopards and carmine bee eaters, the famous bird species in Luangwa, can often be sighted.
Day 7 – 8 | South Luangwa National Park
A touch of higher standard to the previous bush camps awaits you in Mchenya. The camp is shaded by huge old ebony trees. The five chalets are very individually designed and have a free-standing bathtub inside and a private open-air bathroom with toilet. In the main building there is a cozy lounge with a small safari library to browse through and a bar that invites you to have a drink. There is also a small paddling pool. From the large dining table you have a beautiful view of the numerous hippos that cavort in the river in front of the camp. The area around Mchenya is one of the best areas for wildlife viewing and you will go on safaris by jeep or on foot on the days of your stay.
Day 9 | Home trip
After a final hearty breakfast, you will be driven to Mfuwe Airport for your flight back to Lusaka.
