SUSTAINABLE KENYA

Experience Kenya sustainably – with all your senses!
This exceptional safari takes you to beautiful safari destinations in Kenya. You stay mostly in sanctuaries and shelters run by communities and local people.
It also includes a two-day trek through Maasai country into the Maasai Mara, where you’ll have authentic Maasai encounters and ample opportunity for interaction. We have to assume a willingness to sacrifice comfort for the hiking safari, since the mobile tent camp is very simple!

Day 1 | Arrive in Nairobi
Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta Airport, you will be picked up by your driver and driven to the hotel. Depending on the arrival time, you still have the opportunity for optional excursions, e.g. to Daphne Sheldrick’s elephant orphanage or to the Karen Blixen Museum. Ask us about the possibilities!
In recent years, Nairobi has developed into one of the most modern cities in Africa – a city that never sleeps. It is a place of great contrasts, which gives people of different origins an unmistakable character. Kenya’s capital has an excellent range of restaurants and many colorful shops and markets, and is the only city in the world to have its own (and not even a small!) national park.

Day 2 | Nairobi-Aberdares
After breakfast, your safari starts around 09:00. Head north towards the scenic Aberdare Mountains. The highest peak of this mountain range is 4,270 m and its verdant slopes are blessed with rivers and waterfalls.
In the afternoon you can relax at the lodge or go on a guided hike.

Day 3 | Solio Game Reserve
After breakfast you go on a full day game drive in the Solio Reserve, one of the most important rhino sanctuaries in Africa and also one of the most beautiful nature parks in Kenya, located in a high valley between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range.
Over 150 white rhinos and over 50 black rhinos live here. Thanks to successful breeding, animals have repeatedly been relocated to other parks. This is how most of the white rhinos now living in Lake Nakuru National Park grew up in Solio.
However, Solio also protects other species such as zebra, buffalo, giraffe, many antelope and even some prides of lion.

Day 4 | Aberdares-Laikipia
After breakfast, continue north-west to the Laikipia Plateau. The drive takes 2-3 hours and takes you to the wonderful Il Ngwesi Lodge, owned and operated by a cooperative of six Maasai communities.
The region around the lodge is blessed with a great variety of wildlife and on the afternoon game drive you may spot endangered Black Rhino, Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Lelwel Hartebeest and even the very endangered Wild Dog.

Day 5 | Laikipia Plateau
You can discuss the organization of this day with your guide. Go on more game drives on the Laikipia Plateau or visit the Maasai to learn more about their way of life.
Alternatively, you may simply want to spend an afternoon relaxing observing animals at the waterhole and chatting with the lodge staff about the interesting history of Il Ngwesi Group Ranch and the benevolent Laikipia Wildlife Forum (LWF).

Day 6 | Laikipia-Ol Pejeta
Today it’s an approximately 2-hour drive south again to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which is located right on the equator at the foot of Mount Kenya.
Ol Pejeta is a good sanctuary for black rhinos and the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees. It also has a very high density of big cats. You can also admire the world’s last specimens of the northern white rhino here. Enormous efforts are being made to preserve this species as much as possible and Ol Pejeta is your last chance!

Day 8 | Lake Nakuru National Park
At sunrise you will experience a hike to the shore of Lake Elementaita. Let the special atmosphere and the immediate proximity to nature have an effect on you! After breakfast, embark on a full-day safari to Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its flamingos-lined shores. You’ll also find pelicans, rhinos, leopards, hippos, waterbucks and, if you’re lucky, lions resting in the trees.
The hottest hours of the day are spent having lunch at one of the lodges in the park. Late afternoon drive back to Lake Elementaita for dinner.

Day 9 | Lake Elementaita – Maji Moto
A 3-4 hours drive takes you to Maji Moto Eco Camp. Learn from the Maasai how to make fire with simple tools and how to cook ugali, the white corn porridge.
In the afternoon you go on a first bush walk in the vicinity. The way back to the camp passes a hot spring and you can take the opportunity to take a bath in a natural outdoor jacuzzi like the Maasai do. Before dinner, gather around the campfire with the Maasai to share stories.

Day 10 + 11 – Maji Moto – Loita Mountains
Start your two-day hiking adventure through the Loita Mountains towards Maasai Mara. The hike with your Maasai guides starts directly from the camp. The only luggage you need is a daypack, a sweatshirt, a jacket (in case it rains) and drinking water. The main luggage, food and camping equipment are brought to the next campsite by a support vehicle. There the tents will be set up for you and the food will be prepared.
The hiking stages take about 4 – 5 hours each day and lead through the mountains, valleys and savannas of the Loitas. Wild animals are less common here, but you will pass many Maasai villages and learn a lot about the real life of the Loita Maasai. The overnight camps are simple but comfortable. The 3-person tents are equipped with camping mattresses, pillows and duvets. There is also a portable solar shower where you can refresh yourself after the hike.

Day 12 | Loita Hills – Maasai Mara
After breakfast you will say goodbye to your Maasai friends and board your safari vehicle again, which will take you on a 2-hour drive to Kenya’s most famous wildlife sanctuary.
Wildlife viewing in the Maasai Mara is a highlight of any safari year-round. The park’s lush vegetation and regular rainfall ensure a huge population of ungulates, which in turn attract many big cats and other carnivores. Lions, cheetahs and even leopards are relatively easy to find here and the large migratory herds that pass through the Mara from around July to October are one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles.

Day 13 | Maasai Mara National Reserve
Today you will spend the whole day on game drives in Kenya’s most wonderful animal paradise. We recommend a full day safari where you take your picnic lunch with you. This gives you a large radius to see as much of the Mara and its diverse landscapes with rich wildlife. You can also go on two game drives in the morning and afternoon if you prefer to have lunch at camp. It is best to discuss your preference with your guide the evening before.

Day 14 | Maasai Mara-Nairobi
After breakfast drive back to Nairobi which takes about 5-7 hours. On the way you will have lunch at a rest stop before being transferred to the airport or continuing your itinerary.
