NORTH MALAWI ADVENTURER

During this sportive safari you will travel through northern Malawi by car, bicycle and on foot – an interesting mix of dramatic landscapes, wildlife and the clear waters of Lake Malawi await you.

Day 1 | Arrive Lilongwe – Viphya Plateau
Welcome to Malawi! Upon arrival at Lilongwe International Airport, you will be greeted by your guide and driven to Luwawa Forest Lodge, where you will stay in one of the friendly chalets. Here you will find everything you would expect from a relaxed stay in a lodge: a spacious dining room, freshly prepared dishes with organic vegetables from our own garden and even a sauna.

Day 2 | Mountain Bike Tour in the Viphya Plateau
After breakfast, things get active: you spend the next few days on an exciting mountain bike tour, covering a total distance of around 150 kilometers through the incredibly beautiful Viphya Plateau. Today you are about 4 hours by bike (with breaks) and cover a distance of about 42 kilometers. Spend the night in a guest room at Kasito Forestry Lodge. Your bike tour is accompanied by a support vehicle and guide, carrying all camping gear, all groceries, bike repair tools, and a first aid kit.

Day 3 | Mountain Bike Tour in the Viphya Plateau
Today you cover a distance of about 38 kilometers by mountain bike, which takes about 4 hours including the breaks until you reach your accommodation for the night. You spend the night in a tent at the Kawalazi Estate Club House campsite, where you can use the sanitary facilities such as showers and toilets. There is also a bar where you can end the day with a drink. Dinner is freshly prepared for you by our service staff.

Day 4 | Mountain Bike Tour Viphya Plateau – Chintheche
Today after about 40 kilometers and after about 5 hours in the saddle (with breaks) you will reach the village of Chintheche on Lake Malawi.

Day 5 | Lake Malawi
Spend the day at Malawi’s undisputed highlight, Lake Malawi. Makuzi Beach Lodge is located on the north shore of Lake Malawi. The fine white sandy beach is one of the few private beaches in the country. All chalets have their own bathroom and are situated in a well-tended garden area with a view of the lake. The lodge is a perfect lakeside retreat with a great location, comfortable facilities and good service.

Day 6 | Nyika National Park
After breakfast you will leave Lake Malawi and drive to the Nyika Plateau, a unique alpine landscape formation on the African continent. Chelinda Camp overlooks a crystal clear causeway and rolling green hills reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. Wild orchids grow in the area and leopards feel at home here. There are two accommodation options at the camp: four two-bedroom, en-suite chalets with their own dining area, fireplace, lounge and kitchen, or six twin-bedded rooms with en-suite facilities. Dinner is eaten in a shared dining room with lounge, bar and campfire. In Nyika you should have warm clothes with you as it can get quite chilly at night.

Day 7 | Nyika National Park
Today you can explore the beautiful surroundings of the national park on varied day or night game drives, on hikes or by mountain bike. Bird watchers will be delighted with over 400 different species of birds. Which activity you do today will be discussed individually with your guide.

Day 8 | Hiking the Livingstonia Trail
Today your 3-day hiking tour starts on the Livingstonia Trail, which starts in Nyika National Park and ends in Livingstonia. Your first stage leads over the high plateau to the Phata Stream, where the camp will be set up for the night. The tent accommodation is simple but environmentally friendly. There is an outhouse and a bucket shower that fills with hot water. All three meals are freshly prepared for you on site. Altogether you walk about 6 hours today (including breaks).

Day 9 | Hiking the Livingstonia Trail
The hiking route begins today with a steep descent through Mwenembwe Forest to Chakaka Village on the border of Nyika National Park. You will spend the night in a camp set up near a small river.

Day 10 | Hiking the Livingstonia Trail
The last stage follows the cliff face of the northern Rumphi Valley and takes you through local villages. After a final climb you reach the town of Livingstonia.

Day 11 | Livingstonia
Today you can recover from your hiking tour on the beautiful northern shore of Lake Malawi. The Sanctuary Lodge is located in a small idyllic bay on the Sangilo Peninsula. From the tastefully furnished chalets you can enjoy the panoramic view over the lake, the Sangilo Peninsula, the island of Chilumba and the Livingstonia massif in Tanzania.

Day 12 | home trip
Today’s day of departure takes you back to Lilongwe by car, from where you start your journey home.
