SOUTH MALAWI ADVENTURER

The Malawians are extremely friendly and welcoming. Both the picturesque landscape and the culture make this great country worth driving through.
During this safari you will discover the south of the country. In addition to classic safari experiences in Liwonde National Park, you can walk the famous Livingstonia Trail and relax by Lake Malawi.

Day 1 | Arrive in Lilongwe – Nankoma Island
Welcome to Malawi! Upon arrival at Lilongwe International Airport, you will be greeted by your guide and depart for Senga Bay on Lake Malawi. From here, a boat takes you in about 20 minutes to Blue Zebra Island Lodge, which is situated in the waters of Lake Malawi National Park.

Day 2 | Lake Malawi – Nankoma Island
At the Blue Zebra Island Lodge you are accommodated in safari tents and share the sanitary facilities with other guests, similar to a campsite on the Mediterranean. At the lodge you can swim in the beautiful infinity pool, kayak around the islets, play volleyball or just relax on a sun lounger. Snorkeling enthusiasts can borrow free snorkeling gear and head underwater in search of the tropical freshwater fish that linger near shore.

Day 3 | Hiking in the Mulanje Mountains
After breakfast, leave Lake Malawi for a few days of trekking in the magnificent surroundings of the Mulanje Mountains. The drive to the Mulanje Mountains takes about 7 hours today, in the evening the tent is pitched. Accommodation in the tent for the next day is simple but environmentally friendly. There is an outhouse and a bucket shower that fills with hot water. All three meals are freshly prepared for you on site.

Day 4 – 5 | Hiking in the Mulanje Mountains
The hike through the Mulanje Mountains is sometimes a bit more demanding and steeper. Along the way you will discover some beautiful waterfalls with natural stone pools. Please note that the hike can be strenuous in sections depending on your physical condition and that you wear sturdy shoes and drink enough regularly. There is always a break for lunch and there is the opportunity to swim in the stone pools.

Day 6 | Zomba Plateau
This morning the descent from the Mulanje Mountains is on the agenda. The subsequent drive to the Zomba Plateau takes about three hours and you arrive at the Zomba Forest Lodge for lunch. Zomba Forest Lodge is a charming little lodge with only 4 rooms (2 double and 2 twin) in a beautiful location on the plateau.

Day 7 | Zomba Plateau
With its 1800 m altitude, Zomba is an excellent place to hike through the forests or go on a mountain tour. Because of its altitude, the plateau is pleasantly cool compared to the other parts of the country. The forests of the Zomba Plateau are home to some exotic bird species.

Day 8 | Liwonde National Park
Today drive to Liwonde National Park to spot some wildlife. From your accommodation, Mvuu Camp, you can see a large part of the course of the Shire River. Hippos, crocodiles and many exotic birds gather on it.

Day 9 | Liwonde National Park
The camp has a beautiful thatched roof dining and lounge area overlooking the Shire River. Dinner is also sometimes served under the stars. Activities around the camp include boat tours on the Shire River and morning and afternoon game drives. Guests also enjoy nature walks and bike rides.

Day 10 – 11 | Lake Malawi – Domwe Island
Spend these two days at Malawi’s undisputed highlight, Lake Malawi! After breakfast drive to Cape Maclear. Here you can decide whether you want to kayak to Domwe or take a boat to the island (duration of the boat trip around 45 minutes). Domwe Island is the largest uninhabited island in Lake Malawi.

Day 12 | home trip
Today’s day of departure takes you back to Lilongwe by car, from where you start your journey home. The journey takes about 4 hours.
